Brexit Update: Is Muscat Being Warned?

While addressing the media at the residence of the British High Commission, UK Brexit Minister David Jones stated that “friends don’t punish friends”. Keeping in mind Muscat’s tough stance on Brexit, one might think these to be an underhanded warning to him.

The UK was always Malta’s ‘big brother’ in the EU, and favoured us in many aspects. Muscat’s actions may be taken as an insult towards Britain. Muscat has made it clear that any agreement Britain get upon leaving the single market will be inferior to membership, which is fair enough. This being said, Theresa May has already taken a ‘no surrender’ policy with Trump, let alone the EU. Maybe Muscat needs to be a bit softer with his words?
